Burr walnut — prized for its richly figured, swirling grain formed by rare abnormal tree growth — was the defining timber of high Victorian furniture making and remains one of the most beautiful natural materials ever used in antique furniture. The figuring in genuine burr walnut is entirely unique to each tree: no two pieces are alike, and the depth of pattern, warmth of colour, and three-dimensional quality of the grain are characteristics that no manufactured material has ever successfully replicated.
Victorian cabinet makers understood this. The finest burr walnut pieces of the 1850s–1880s — credenzas, chiffoniers, games tables, and pier cabinets — were conceived specifically to showcase the timber, with bookmatched veneers arranged to create dramatic mirror symmetries across the façade. At their best, these pieces represent the Victorian period at its most accomplished.
