Georgian furniture represents the golden age of English cabinetmaking — dating from 1714 to 1830 and encompassing the work of the three greatest names in the English furniture tradition: Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton. The period is characterised by restrained classical proportions, superb mahogany and satinwood veneers, and a standard of construction that has never been surpassed. A well-made Georgian piece is a masterclass in proportion — every element in considered relationship to every other, nothing excessive, nothing insufficient.

Cuban mahogany, used in the finest Georgian pieces before supplies were exhausted, has a density and figuring that later timbers cannot match. Satinwood, favoured by Sheraton and the later Georgian makers, brings a pale golden warmth and silky surface that remains immediately recognisable. Both timbers develop extraordinary patina over two centuries of careful use — a quality entirely irreplaceable and entirely beyond reproduction.
