Our Stock

Types of Antique Dining Table We Stock

Our dining table collection spans several distinct styles, periods, and sizes.

Georgian Extending Dining Tables

Typically in mahogany with D-end leaves and turned or reeded legs. These tables extend to seat 8–14 guests and collapse to a practical everyday size. The gold standard of British dining furniture.

Victorian Pedestal Dining Tables

Circular or oval tables on a central pedestal base — often in mahogany or burr walnut. Elegant and space-efficient, these tables work beautifully in both period and contemporary dining rooms.

Regency Style Circular Tables

Flame mahogany or rosewood circular tables on pillar-and-claw bases. Bold, confident pieces that make a real statement in a dining room or kitchen.

French Centre Tables

Marble-top circular tables on ormolu-mounted bases, or kingwood parquetry centre tables in the Louis XV or XVI style. Exceptional decorative pieces that double as dining tables in the right setting.

Dining Tables with Chairs

We regularly source matched sets of dining table and chairs — from Georgian mahogany sets with shield-back chairs to Victorian carved sets with upholstered balloon-back chairs. A matched set is always preferable to a mixed one.

Breakfast & Centre Tables

Tilt-top breakfast tables, games tables, and centre tables that serve equally well as dining tables for smaller households. Practical, beautiful, and often better proportioned for modern homes.

Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Antique Dining Tables

Size & Seating Capacity

As a general rule, allow 60cm of table width per person for comfortable dining. A 180cm table seats 6 comfortably; 240cm seats 8–10. For extending tables, check how many leaves are present and whether the extension mechanism works smoothly. We always state the extended and collapsed dimensions in our listings.

Top Condition

The dining table top receives more wear than almost any other piece of furniture. Some patina and minor marks are expected and desirable on a genuine antique — they tell the story of the piece. Look for structural issues such as warping, splits along joins, or poorly matched replacement sections. A well-patinated original surface is far preferable to a heavily repolished one.

Leg & Base Condition

Check that legs are original to the table and not replacements. On pedestal tables, examine the column and base for cracks, repairs, or replaced sections. On extending tables, check that all legs are matched and that the frame is structurally sound when fully extended.

Matching Chairs

If you need chairs to match, it is always better to source them at the same time as the table. We often have matched sets available, and can sometimes source chairs to complement a table you have already purchased. Contact us at lee@hawkinsantiques.com with details of your table.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What size antique dining table do I need?
Allow approximately 60cm of table length per person for comfortable dining. A 150cm table seats 4–6; 180cm seats 6–8; 240cm seats 8–10. For extending tables, consider both the collapsed size for everyday use and the extended size for entertaining. Always measure your room carefully, allowing at least 90cm clearance around the table for chairs and movement.
Can I get matching chairs with an antique dining table?
Yes — we regularly stock matched sets of dining table and chairs, and we can often source chairs to complement a table you have already purchased. Contact us at lee@hawkinsantiques.com or call 01446 744271 to discuss your requirements.
Are antique dining tables practical for everyday use?
Absolutely. Antique dining tables were built to be used and are generally far more robust than modern equivalents. We recommend using table pads or a protective cloth for hot dishes, and wiping spills promptly. With basic care, a well-made Georgian or Victorian dining table will last another century.

Yes. We deliver to all UK mainland postcodes using a specialist two-man antique delivery team. All pieces are fully wrapped and insured in transit. For large extending tables we always assess the delivery route in advance — please call us on 01446 744271 to discuss.
