Expert Advice
Buying Guide: What to Look for in an Antique Sideboard
Construction & Authenticity
Genuine antique sideboards show hand craftsmanship — hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers of pine or oak in drawer linings, and patina built up over generations. Secondary timbers should show age consistent with the piece.
Condition
Some wear is expected and desirable. Check that drawers run smoothly, doors hang correctly, and the carcass is sound. Minor veneer repairs or replaced handles are acceptable — we always disclose these in our listings.
Size & Proportion
Measure carefully before buying. Georgian and Victorian sideboards were made for larger rooms. As a guide, allow at least 90cm clear space in front for comfortable use, and consider ceiling height for pieces with high mirrored backs.
Handles & Fittings
Original handles add significantly to value. On Georgian pieces, look for oval brass plates with bail handles. We always indicate whether handles are original or period replacements in our listings.
