French Antique Furniture Styles We Specialise In

French furniture spans several distinct royal and Imperial periods, each with its own aesthetic character and collector following.

Louis XV Furniture

Flowing Rococo curves, cabriole legs, and elaborate ormolu mounts. Typically veneered in kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood with parquetry or marquetry decoration. The most sculptural and exuberant of the French royal styles - c.1723–1774.

Louis XVI Furniture

A shift towards Neoclassical restraint - straighter lines, tapered fluted legs, and refined ormolu mounts featuring urns, laurel wreaths, and classical figures. Elegant and architectural - c.1774–1792.

Vernis Martin Furniture

Hand-painted panels - typically romantic garden scenes, figures, or florals - set within gilt-bronze frames on kingwood carcasses. Named after the Martin brothers who perfected the technique. Among the most sought-after French pieces we carry.

Empire & Napoleon III

Bold, architectural furniture with heavy ormolu mounts, dark mahogany or ebonised finishes, and imposing proportions. Napoleon III combined earlier styles with Victorian-era opulence to create dramatic statement pieces.

Belle Époque (c.1880–1914)

The great Parisian cabinet makers - Linke, Sormani, Durand, Zwiener - produced extraordinary pieces during this period. Superb kingwood veneers, exquisitely cast ormolu, and elaborate Vernis Martin panels characterise the finest examples. Highly collectable worldwide.

French Provincial & Oak

Solid oak armoires, buffets, and farm tables from the French countryside - honest construction, exceptional character, and substantial scale. Increasingly sought after as buyers rediscover the beauty of provincial French furniture.

Why Choose Hawkins Antiques

French Antique Furniture Specialists Since 1960

French furniture has been central to our business for over 65 years. Here is what makes our collection different from general antique dealers and online marketplaces.

Genuine Specialists

French antique furniture is not a sideline for us - it is one of our core specialisms. We have been buying, researching, and selling French pieces for over 65 years. We know the difference between a quality Belle Époque vitrine and a later reproduction, and we describe every piece accordingly.

Personally Sourced

Every French piece in our collection is personally sourced from private estates, country house sales, and specialist dealers across the UK and France. We never buy sight unseen. Each piece is individually examined, researched, and selected by us before it enters the collection.

Honest Attribution

We never overclaim on attribution. If a piece is in the manner of François Linke we say so - we never describe it as by Linke unless we have documentary evidence. Honest dealing is the foundation of our reputation and every listing reflects that.

Full Condition Reports

French furniture with elaborate veneers, ormolu mounts, and Vernis Martin panels requires honest, detailed condition reporting. We describe veneer condition, gilding, panel condition, and any restoration work clearly in every listing - including details most dealers would omit.

Free UK Delivery

Every French antique furniture piece we sell is delivered free to the UK mainland by our specialist two-man antique delivery team - fully wrapped, fully insured, and placed in the room of your choice. French furniture requires careful specialist handling and we never compromise on this.

Expert Advice

Buying Guide: French Antique Furniture

Identifying Quality

The finest French pieces show perfectly matched veneers, precisely cast and chased ormolu mounts, and immaculate marquetry. Look at the quality of the gilt bronze - fine pieces have crisply detailed mounts with individual petals, acanthus leaves, and figures clearly defined. Poor quality castings are a reliable indicator of a later reproduction.

Maker's Marks & Attribution

The most valuable French pieces carry maker's stamps - cartouches stamped into the carcass timber. Pieces by Linke, Sormani, Durand, or Zwiener command significant premiums. Many fine pieces are unstamped but clearly of high quality - described as "in the manner of" a known maker. We always make this distinction clearly in our listings.

Condition & Restoration

French furniture with elaborate veneers and mounts requires specialist care. Some veneer loss or minor repairs are normal on 150+ year old pieces. Ormolu should retain its original gilding where possible - re-gilded mounts are less desirable than original worn gilding. We always disclose the condition of gilding in our listings.

Vernis Martin Panels

The painted panels on Vernis Martin pieces are the most vulnerable element. Look for consistent colouring without obvious retouching, and check the lacquer surface for crazing or lifting at the edges. Major repainting of panels significantly reduces value - we always describe panel condition in full in our listings.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture?
Louis XV furniture (c.1723–1774) is characterised by Rococo curves, asymmetry, and elaborate decoration. Louis XVI furniture (c.1774–1792) marks a shift to Neoclassicism — straighter lines, symmetry, and restrained decoration inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Both styles are highly collectable and we regularly carry examples of both periods.
What is Vernis Martin furniture?
Vernis Martin is a European lacquering technique developed by the Martin brothers in 18th-century France. Furniture decorated in this style features hand-painted panels — often pastoral or romantic scenes — beneath a protective lacquer coating, typically set within ormolu frames on kingwood carcasses. Belle Époque Vernis Martin pieces are among the most sought-after French antiques we sell.
Who was François Linke and why are his pieces valuable?
François Linke (1855–1946) was the greatest Parisian cabinet maker of the Belle Époque period. Born in Bohemia, he established his workshop in Paris and became celebrated for pieces of extraordinary technical quality — superb kingwood veneers, exquisitely cast and gilded ormolu, and elaborate Vernis Martin panels. Signed Linke pieces command very high prices at auction. We regularly carry pieces in the manner of Linke and occasionally pieces with documented Linke attribution.
Do you specialise in French antique furniture?
Yes — French antique furniture is at the heart of what we do at Hawkins Antiques. We have been buying and selling French pieces for over 65 years, and our stock regularly includes Vernis Martin cabinets, Louis XV commodes, kingwood vitrines, and Belle Époque writing tables by known Parisian makers.
What is the price range for French antique furniture?
Our French antique furniture ranges from under £750 for smaller occasional pieces to £15,000 or more for exceptional Belle Époque vitrines or commodes by known makers. Louis XV and XVI commodes and vitrines typically range from £2,000–£8,000. Vernis Martin pieces vary widely depending on size, condition, and quality of the painted panels. All prices include free UK mainland delivery.
Do you ship French antique furniture internationally?
Yes. We regularly ship to Europe, the USA, Asia, and beyond through specialist antique couriers with full insurance. We have established international buyer relationships and handle all aspects of the export process. Contact us at lee@hawkinsantiques.com for a shipping quote to your location.
