An antique display vitrine is one of the most versatile and beautiful pieces of furniture you can own. Originally designed to showcase porcelain, silver, clocks, and decorative objects, a fine vitrine brings elegance and practicality to any room — and the 19th century produced examples of extraordinary quality, from delicate Edwardian satinwood cabinets to elaborate French ormolu-mounted vitrines with Vernis Martin panels.

Our Stock

Types of Antique Vitrine We Stock

Our vitrine collection spans the finest French and English display cabinet making of the 18th and 19th centuries.

French Kingwood Vitrines

Ormolu-mounted vitrines in kingwood or tulipwood veneers — typically with glazed sides and top, a marble or parquetry base, and exquisitely cast gilt-bronze mounts. The finest examples are attributed to makers such as Linke, Sormani, or Durand.

Vernis Martin Vitrines

Cabinets featuring hand-painted Vernis Martin panels — romantic pastoral scenes or floral compositions — set within ormolu frames on kingwood carcasses. Among the most decorative and sought-after French cabinet forms.

Edwardian Satinwood Vitrines

Light, elegant display cabinets in satinwood or mahogany with painted decoration, astragal glazed doors, and tapering legs. Beautifully proportioned for modern homes and equally suited to books, china, or decorative objects.

Victorian Mahogany Display Cabinets

Substantial glazed display cabinets in mahogany — often with carved decoration, mirrored backs, and adjustable shelving. Practical and impressive, these pieces work well in both period and contemporary interiors.

Bijouterie Tables

Small glazed display tables designed to showcase jewellery and small decorative objects — typically in kingwood or mahogany with ormolu mounts and a hinged glass top. Decorative, practical, and a wonderful focal point.

Corner Vitrines

Triangular display cabinets designed to fit into a corner — maximising display space while making elegant use of an awkward space. Usually in mahogany or satinwood, Georgian or Edwardian.

Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Antique Display Vitrines

Glazing & Glass Condition

Original glass is far preferable to modern replacement glass on antique vitrines — old glass has a slight imperfection and warmth that modern float glass lacks entirely. Check for cracks, chips, or replaced panes. On curved glass vitrines, original curved glass is particularly valuable and difficult to replace — check it carefully. We always note glazing condition in our listings.

Ormolu Mounts

On French vitrines, the quality and condition of the ormolu mounts is critical. Fine mounts should be crisply cast with clearly defined detail — leaves, figures, and scrolls should be sharp and well-defined. Check that all mounts are present and original. Re-gilded or replaced mounts are less desirable than original worn gilding.

Interior Condition

Check the interior shelving, backing, and any mirror panels carefully. Original silk or velvet linings, even faded, add to the character of a piece. Mirror backs should be examined for silvering loss — some foxing is normal on antique mirrors but heavy silvering loss affects the display quality. We note all interior condition details in our listings.

Vernis Martin Panels

If buying a Vernis Martin vitrine, examine the painted panels closely. Original paintwork shows depth, movement, and subtle shading that is difficult to replicate. Look for consistent colouring across all panels and check the lacquer surface for crazing, lifting, or areas of obvious retouching. Major repainting significantly reduces value.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an antique display vitrine?
A vitrine is a glazed display cabinet designed to showcase decorative objects — porcelain, silver, clocks, jewellery, and other collectibles. The term comes from the French word for glass. Vitrines range from small bijouterie tables to large floor-standing cabinets, and were produced in both England and France throughout the 18th and 19th centuries in a huge variety of styles and qualities.
What is a Vernis Martin vitrine?
A Vernis Martin vitrine is a display cabinet decorated with hand-painted panels in the Vernis Martin lacquer technique — typically showing romantic pastoral scenes, figures in gardens, or floral compositions. The panels are set within gilt-bronze ormolu frames on kingwood or tulipwood carcasses. The technique was developed in 18th-century France and reached its peak in the Belle Époque period of the late 19th century.
What can I display in an antique vitrine?
Antique vitrines are ideal for displaying porcelain, silver, glass, clocks, jewellery, and other decorative objects. The glazed sides and top allow objects to be viewed from multiple angles. Many customers also use vitrines to display books, photographs, and personal collections. The adjustable shelving found in most vitrines makes them very flexible in use.
Can I view antique vitrines in person?
Yes — our showroom and warehouse is at Unit 15, Palmers Vale Business Centre, Barry, CF63 2XA. Please call ahead on 01446 744271 to arrange a convenient time to visit. We often have 10 or more vitrines in stock at any one time.
