A fine late 19th century French Vernis Martin bombé commode, richly veneered and adorned with hand-painted romantic panels framed by finely cast gilt bronze ormolu mounts, circa 1880. The shaped breccia marble top, beautifully executed Vernis Martin pastoral scene, and sculptural bombé form combine to create a commode of exceptional decorative quality and considerable presence.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The commode is surmounted by a shaped breccia marble top in warm cream, rose, and honey tones - the natural veining complementing the richly veneered façade beneath. The beautifully executed Vernis Martin scene depicting elegant figures within a pastoral setting is enclosed by scrolling ormolu mounts of excellent quality, with further gilt bronze mounts enriching the corners, legs, and apron throughout. The sculptural bombé form - swelling outward from its own centre with characteristic confidence - provides the ideal ground for this programme of decoration. The interior comprises two deep drawers, clean and smoothly functioning, offering practical storage while retaining strong decorative presence.
