Overview

An elegant antique French Louis XV style Vernis Martin centre table dating from circa 1900, richly decorated with a hand-painted pastoral scene and finely detailed gilt-bronze mounts.

The table is formed with a beautifully shaped serpentine top centred by a large painted fête galante scene depicting elegantly dressed figures within a wooded landscape. The composition is framed by fine line inlay and contrasting crossbanding, creating a particularly decorative surface with strong late nineteenth-century French character.

A removable shaped glass protector sits above the top, helping to preserve the painted decoration while allowing the artwork to remain clearly visible.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The central painted panel is the principal decorative feature, depicting a lively romantic gathering in a wooded setting in the manner associated with French fête galante painting. The surrounding timber is arranged to complement the composition, with shaped borders and contrasting veneers enhancing the outline of the top.

Below, the shaped frieze incorporates a useful central drawer, finished with a decorative gilt-bronze mount. Further finely modelled mounts descend from the shoulders of the cabriole legs, which terminate in gilt-bronze sabots.

The combination of painted decoration, warm timber tones, gilt-bronze ornament and elegant proportions gives this table considerable presence without making it visually heavy. It would work equally well as a centre table, occasional table or statement piece in a drawing room, reception room or refined contemporary interior.
