Our Stock

Types of Antique Bookcase We Stock

Our bookcase collection spans the full range of Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian library and display furniture.

Georgian Mahogany Bookcases

Glazed upper sections with astragal bar doors, solid panelled lower cupboards, and elegant proportions. The finest Georgian bookcases are attributable to makers such as Gillows or in the manner of Chippendale or Hepplewhite.

Bureau Bookcases

A fall-front writing bureau with a glazed bookcase above — one of the most practical and beautiful pieces of Georgian furniture. In mahogany, walnut, or oak, these pieces combine a writing desk, storage, and display in a single elegant form.

Victorian Breakfront Bookcases

Large, imposing library bookcases with a projecting central section — the grandest storage pieces of the Victorian period. Usually in mahogany with carved detail and adjustable shelving behind glazed astragal doors.

Edwardian Display Cabinets

Lighter than Victorian bookcases — satinwood or mahogany glazed display cabinets with inlaid decoration. Equally suited to books, china, or decorative objects. A versatile and beautiful piece for any room.

Carved Oak Bookcases

Solid oak bookcases with carved floral or foliate decoration — often in the Arts and Crafts or Jacobean revival style. Robust, characterful, and practical. Usually Victorian or Edwardian, c.1880–1910.

Low Bookcases & Open Shelves

Dwarf bookcases, waterfall bookshelves, and open library shelves — practical and compact pieces for modern homes. Georgian and Regency low bookcases in mahogany are particularly sought after.

Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Antique Bookcases

Size & Shelf Depth

Check shelf depth carefully — antique bookcases were made for smaller books than many modern publications. Georgian and Victorian shelves are typically 20–25cm deep, which suits most books but may not accommodate large art books or oversized volumes. Adjustable shelving is a practical advantage. Always measure height against your ceiling, allowing for the cornice.

Glazing & Doors

Original astragal glazing bars are a significant feature of quality antique bookcases. Check that all glazing is original — replaced glass or missing panes affect both appearance and value. Doors should hang correctly and the lock mechanisms should function. We always note glazing condition and any replacements in our listings.

Structural Soundness

Check that the carcass is square and sound — particularly on larger breakfront bookcases which can suffer from movement over time. Shelves should be original to the piece and show the same patina as the interior. Replaced shelves are acceptable but should be noted. Examine the back for repairs or replacements.

Breakfront Delivery

Large breakfront bookcases almost always disassemble into sections for delivery — typically the cornice, upper glazed section, and lower cupboard base separate. This allows access through standard doorways. Please call us before purchasing a large bookcase to discuss access — we assess all delivery routes in advance.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an antique bookcase fit through my doors?
Most antique bookcases disassemble into sections for delivery — the cornice and upper glazed section typically separate from the lower cupboard base. This allows access through standard doorways and up most staircases. Please call us on 01446 744271 if you have any concerns about access and we will advise before you purchase.
Are antique bookcase shelves adjustable?
Many are — Georgian and Victorian bookcases often have shelves that rest on adjustable wooden pegs or brass pins. We always note whether shelving is fixed or adjustable in our listings. If you need specific shelf heights for your book collection, please contact us before purchasing.
What is an astragal glazed bookcase?
Astragal glazing refers to the decorative wooden glazing bars that divide the glass doors of an antique bookcase into smaller panes. The bars are typically arranged in geometric patterns — Gothic arches, diamond shapes, or simple rectangular grids. Original astragal glazing is a sign of quality and period authenticity.
Can I view antique bookcases in person?
Yes — our showroom and warehouse is at Unit 15, Palmers Vale Business Centre, Barry, CF63 2XA. Please call ahead on 01446 744271 to arrange a convenient time to visit.
