What Vernis Martin is, how to identify genuine pieces, and why the Napoleon III revival pieces are among the most sought-after French antiques available today.

Vernis Martin Furniture: A Guide for Collectors

There are few decorative techniques in the history of European furniture that capture the imagination quite like Vernis Martin. Rich, romantic, and unmistakably French, it has adorned the finest pieces in royal palaces, aristocratic townhouses, and the great country houses of Britain for over three centuries. Yet for many buyers, the term remains mysterious. This guide aims to change that.

What is Vernis Martin?

Vernis Martin is a lacquer technique developed in 18th century France, named after the Martin brothers - Guillaume, Étienne-Simon, Julien, and Robert - who perfected and patented it in Paris in 1730. Working during the reign of Louis XV, they created a brilliantly coloured varnish that could imitate the deep, lustrous lacquerwork being imported from China and Japan at enormous expense. The French court fell in love with it immediately.

The technique involves applying multiple layers of richly pigmented varnish over a prepared wooden surface, between which skilled artists would paint figurative scenes - pastoral landscapes, gallant courtly figures, mythological subjects, and romantic garden vignettes. The result was furniture of extraordinary decorative richness that was uniquely French in character despite its Asian inspirations.

How to Identify Genuine Vernis Martin Pieces

Antique Vernis Martin lacquered French furniture

Authentic 18th and 19th century Vernis Martin pieces share several identifiable characteristics. The lacquer ground tends to be deep and warm in tone - rich ochres, burnt oranges, and dark greens are typical - with painted scenes of considerable artistic quality. Over time, genuine aged lacquer develops a fine network of surface cracking known as craquelure. This is not damage - it is the hallmark of authentic aged lacquerwork and actually adds to a piece's value and character.

The painted scenes themselves reward close attention. On quality pieces the figures are painted with real skill and detail - look for depth in the landscapes, convincing anatomy in the figures, and subtle use of light and shadow. The best examples are essentially miniature oil paintings applied to furniture.

Gilt bronze ormolu mounts - handles, corner mounts, and decorative sabots on the feet - typically accompany fine Vernis Martin pieces and indicate cabinet-making of the highest order. The combination of lacquer, ormolu, and elegant French forms such as cabriole legs and serpentine curves is the definitive signature of the style.

The Napoleon III Revival

While the technique originated in the early 18th century, some of the finest Vernis Martin pieces were actually produced during the Napoleon III period of the mid-to-late 19th century, when there was a passionate revival of the Louis XV aesthetic. Cabinet makers of this era produced exceptional work - in some cases technically superior to the originals - and these pieces are now highly sought after in their own right.

Vernis Martin at Hawkins Antiques

We currently have two exceptional examples in our warehouse. The first is a 19th century Vernis Martin lacquered side table featuring hand-painted pastoral scenes across every surface - the shaped top, the serpentine drawer front, and the under-tier below - with pierced brass gallery, gilt bronze ormolu mounts, and its original key and tassel still present. The second is a newly arrived Vernis Martin style painted cabinet of similar quality and period, currently being catalogued.

Pieces of this quality are increasingly difficult to find. If you are searching for French decorative furniture of the Vernis Martin tradition, we would be delighted to hear from you.
