Craftsmanship & Design
The cabinet is arranged around a gently bowed front, with two glazed doors
flanked by curved glazed sides. This flowing outline allows the contents
to be appreciated from several angles while giving the cabinet a graceful,
balanced appearance.
Above the doors, an elaborate pierced frieze of scrolling foliage is
surmounted by a raised decorative gallery. Gilt metal borders outline the
glazing, while trailing foliate mounts accentuate the upper corners and
a long decorative mount follows the central door division.
The lower section incorporates pictorial panels framed by gilt metal
borders. Beneath these, a shaped apron is centred by a prominent scrolling
foliate mount, with slender cabriole legs continuing the curved lines of
the cabinet.
Decorative Panels
The lower front panels depict romantic pastoral scenes, including a seated
couple with a musical instrument and a standing couple within a wooded
landscape. Warm ochre, brown and golden tones complement the surrounding
wood finish and gilt decoration.
Landscape panels continue around the curved sides, extending the decorative
treatment beyond the front. The imagery evokes the Vernis Martin tradition,
contributing to the cabinet's French decorative character.
Interior & Display
The double doors open to a rich red floral-patterned lining, creating a
distinctive backdrop for porcelain, glassware and small decorative objects.
Two glass shelves provide three display levels within the main glazed
compartment.
The transparent shelves and side glazing maintain an open appearance,
allowing the objects on display to remain the focus. Measuring 164 cm high,
103 cm wide and 42 cm deep, the cabinet offers an elegant display arrangement
within a relatively shallow footprint.
