Craftsmanship & Detail

Each chair is formed with a generously curved balloon-shaped top rail flowing into slender upright supports. The open back is centred by a shaped horizontal splat, carved with restrained scrolling terminals that add decorative interest without overwhelming the elegant silhouette.

The front legs are finely turned and reeded, with shaped collars and tapered lower sections, while the gently swept rear legs provide visual balance and stability. The seat rails retain their warm mahogany colour and are finished with traditional close-nailed upholstery.

The mahogany displays an attractive reddish-brown tone, varied grain and a well-developed surface consistent with genuine Victorian furniture. Small variations between the chairs reflect their hand-finished construction and long history of use.

The existing neutral upholstery is later and now displays substantial staining, marks and wear. Reupholstery is recommended, allowing the new owner to select a fabric suited precisely to their dining room or interior scheme.

Complete sets of six period dining chairs are increasingly desirable, particularly when they retain matching proportions and decorative detailing throughout. Their restrained design allows them to sit comfortably around a Georgian, Regency or Victorian dining table while also working effectively within a more contemporary setting.
