A refined set of eight mid-20th-century English mahogany dining chairs by Rackstraw, comprising six single chairs and two armchairs, retaining an original maker's label.

Executed in the traditional Hepplewhite manner, the chairs combine elegant shield-shaped backs, finely pierced and carved splats, moulded tapering legs and coordinated upholstered seats. The mahogany displays a rich, warm colour throughout, complemented by blue-grey and gold-toned patterned fabric.

Craftsmanship & Design

Each chair features a shield-shaped back enclosed by a finely moulded frame. Within, the pierced central splat incorporates carved foliage, small flower heads and draped motifs, creating an intricate design balanced by slender upright elements.

The shaped front seat rails continue the gentle curves of the backs, while the tapering front legs are detailed with vertical mouldings and terminate in spade feet. Stretchers connect the legs beneath the seats, giving the lower frames a balanced, orderly appearance.

The two armchairs repeat the design of the single chairs, with sweeping arms carried on shaped supports. Positioned at the ends of a dining table, they complete a cohesive eight-seat arrangement.

Upholstery & Finish

The seats are upholstered in a coordinated fabric combining blue-grey floral patterning with contrasting gold-toned vertical bands. The arrangement complements the warm mahogany frames and reinforces the traditional character of the set.

The chairs are closely matched in colour, form and decorative detail, giving the complete suite a consistent appearance around a dining table. Their open backs retain a sense of lightness while allowing the carved decoration to be appreciated.

Maker & Identification

An original Rackstraw maker's label is retained, identifying the maker of the set. These mid-20th-century chairs interpret traditional English dining chair design through their shield backs, carved ornament and restrained proportions.
