Description

An exceptional matched pair of antique French kingwood Vernis Martin vitrine display cabinets dating to circa 1880, beautifully crafted in the Louis XV taste and retaining their original marble tops, finely cast ormolu mounts and painted decorative panels.

Constructed from richly figured kingwood veneers arranged in elegant parquetry patterns, each cabinet displays superb colour, movement and decorative refinement. The finely cast gilt bronze mounts, shaped marble tops and elegant cabriole legs give the pair a strong sense of French nineteenth-century luxury.

The lower panels feature exquisite Vernis Martin painted scenes, signed V. Gossens, depicting romantic and allegorical subjects in the Rococo manner. These hand-painted panels add considerable decorative and collectible appeal, setting the cabinets apart from ordinary French vitrines of the period.

Both cabinets are fitted with glazed doors, glazed sides and glass shelves, allowing light to pass through the interior and creating an elegant display space for porcelain, silver, glass, objets d’art or fine collections.

One cabinet retains its luxurious crimson silk-lined interior, while the companion cabinet has a more understated interior, allowing the quality of the veneers, ormolu and painted decoration to remain the focus.

Matched pairs of French kingwood vitrines of this quality are increasingly difficult to source, particularly with marble tops, ormolu mounts and signed Vernis Martin panels.
