Craftsmanship & Detail

The bureau is constructed from beautifully figured satinwood displaying a warm golden colour and attractive natural movement throughout. Its elegant bombe-shaped profile is enhanced by fine line inlay and extensive hand-painted decoration extending across the fall front, drawer fronts and shaped side panels.

The fall front is centred by a charming oval painted panel depicting a cherubic figure, framed by flowing ribbons, floral garlands and scrolling classical ornament. Further painted swags decorate each drawer front, creating a highly cohesive and visually striking design from top to bottom.

Opening the fall front reveals a fitted writing interior incorporating shaped pigeonholes, small drawers and a central cupboard decorated with a further painted figural panel. The arrangement provides useful storage for correspondence, stationery and personal items, while the fall creates a generous writing surface when open.

Beneath are four graduated drawers offering substantial practical storage. Each drawer retains attractive circular brass handles and is enriched with individually painted floral garlands, ribbons and foliage. The curved sides are similarly decorated with classical urns, foliage and tied ribbon motifs.

Decorative satinwood furniture of this scale and quality remains highly sought after by collectors, interior designers and discerning homeowners. Equally suited to a bedroom, drawing room, study, hallway or luxury interior, this bureau combines useful storage with exceptional decorative presence.

Condition Report

Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear, marks, surface scratches, minor veneer imperfections and patination consistent with approximately 125 years of use.

The satinwood retains attractive colour and figuring throughout, while the hand-painted floral and classical decoration remains remarkably extensive and visually appealing. There is expected wear, fading and minor loss to areas of the painted decoration, particularly around frequently handled surfaces and drawer fronts.

The fall front displays age-related surface wear and a visible shrinkage line or historic split extending from the upper edge near the lock area, as shown in the photographs. The front remains functional and opens correctly.

The fitted interior is complete with drawers, pigeonholes and central cupboard. The existing writing inset is heavily worn, marked and discoloured and would benefit from replacement or professional reupholstery. This can be arranged separately if required.

The drawers operate correctly and provide generous storage. The brass handles display age-related tarnishing and wear consistent with the period.

The bureau remains structurally sound, sturdy and ready for use, with the expected character and imperfections associated with genuine antique furniture.
