Craftsmanship & Detail

The shaped top is enclosed by an elegant pierced brass gallery framing a beautifully hand-painted lacquer panel depicting a romantic pastoral scene in the traditional Vernis Martin manner. Below, the frieze drawer features further painted decoration and retains its original working key and tassel. The table stands on graceful cabriole legs mounted with gilt bronze ormolu decoration terminating in finely detailed sabots, while the shaped lower tier provides additional display space together with further lacquer decoration. Inspired by the celebrated 18th century French Vernis Martin lacquer technique, the piece combines richly coloured surfaces, romantic painted imagery, and refined gilt bronze detailing to exceptional decorative effect.

Condition Report

This table is presented in good antique condition consistent with its age of over 140 years. The painted lacquer decoration remains vivid and largely intact throughout, displaying excellent colour and detail. The craquelure visible to the top surface is entirely authentic and expected, being the natural result of genuine aged lacquer rather than damage, and adds greatly to the piece’s character and authenticity.

The ormolu mounts retain good original gilding and the drawer operates smoothly. The original key and tassel remain present. Minor age-consistent wear is visible throughout, entirely appropriate for a genuine 19th century piece of this type. An honest description from a specialist dealer with over 60 years of family experience.
