Description

A fine signed 19th-century marine oil painting bearing the name of the celebrated British artist Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843–1907), presented within an impressive antique gilt frame.

The atmospheric composition depicts sailing vessels and working boats gathered upon calm waters beneath a glowing evening sky. In the foreground, figures occupy a substantial river barge, while larger sailing ships and distant architecture gradually emerge through the warm haze beyond.

The painting displays a beautifully restrained tonal palette of amber, gold and muted brown. Careful observation of the vessels, figures and river landscape is balanced by a soft atmospheric treatment, creating a maritime scene of considerable tranquillity, depth and decorative appeal.

The work is signed “Arthur J. Meadows” to the lower-left corner and is accompanied by an engraved artist’s plaque attached to the frame. Its substantial moulded gilt surround gives the painting commanding architectural presence and makes it especially well suited to a drawing room, study, hallway or traditional country-house interior.

Arthur Joseph Meadows belonged to a distinguished family of British marine painters and became particularly admired for his carefully observed coastal, river and continental harbour scenes.
