Craftsmanship & Detail
The substantial urn-shaped body is richly ornamented in relief with a lively Bacchic scene of classical putti surrounded by scrolling foliage, fruiting vines and floral motifs.
Sculptural handles rise from expressive animal-mask terminals, creating a balanced and imposing profile. Beneath, the lower body is decorated with deep fluting before descending to a moulded knop and broad circular pedestal base enriched with acanthus leaves and repeating classical borders.
The upper section retains an English duplex burner fitted with two independently operated wick controls marked “Duplex Palmer” and “Best English Make.” The twin-wick arrangement was designed to produce a broader and brighter flame than a conventional single-wick lamp.
The silver-plated surface has developed attractive variation and age-related patination, which emphasises the depth and crispness of the cast decoration.
Complete with its burner but presently without a glass chimney or shade, the lamp is offered primarily as a decorative antique. Its sculptural quality and substantial proportions make it particularly effective when displayed on a console table, side cabinet, pedestal or within a collection of antique lighting.
Decorative lighting of this scale and complexity remains desirable among collectors and interior designers, particularly where original period components and strongly modelled classical decoration survive together.
