Craftsmanship & Detail

The wardrobe is constructed from beautifully figured satinwood, enriched with contrasting ebony stringing and delicate floral marquetry. The timber displays excellent colour and depth, giving the piece a light, refined and highly decorative appearance.

The central section features cupboard doors enclosing fitted linen shelves above four graduated drawers, while the two flanking mirrored doors provide generous hanging space. The original brass handles, escutcheons and inlaid ornament remain beautifully in keeping with the period.

The wardrobe retains its Maple & Co. Depository label, confirming its prestigious maker association. Maple & Co. were among the leading London furniture makers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, supplying high-quality furniture to distinguished homes in Britain and internationally.

Condition

Condition Report

The compactum is presented in good antique condition commensurate with its age of over 100 years. The satinwood veneer is sound and well-preserved throughout, retaining a warm golden patina consistent with a genuine period piece. The marquetry inlay remains intact across all surfaces - the floral swags, scrolling acanthus, and foliate motifs are all clearly defined and well preserved with no significant losses of note.

The four drawers run smoothly and the central cupboard together with the flanking hanging sections are fully functional with their original fittings intact. The oval mirrored doors retain their original mirror plates and the gilt acorn finial remains present and intact. An honest description from a specialist dealer with over 60 years of family experience.
