Of impressive scale and exceptionally decorative quality, the cabinet reflects the late Victorian and Edwardian revival of Sheraton and neoclassical furniture, combining beautifully figured satinwood with delicate hand-painted decoration and elegant architectural detailing.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The upper frieze is particularly accomplished, with painted floral garlands arranged around a charming central classical panel depicting female figures dancing within a landscape. Further painted swags, wreaths and foliage decorate the lower frieze and drawer front, creating a richly decorative composition without overwhelming the elegant proportions of the cabinet.

A pair of tall glazed doors opens to reveal a generously proportioned display interior fitted with glass shelves and a velvet-lined back. Glazed side panels allow light to enter from multiple directions, making the cabinet particularly well suited to displaying porcelain, silver, glassware, objets d'art or a specialist collection.

The cabinet stands upon four architectural square legs with fluted decoration, while brass ring handles provide a restrained neoclassical finishing detail.

Hampton & Sons, London

Of particular importance is the surviving original trade label reading “HAMPTON & SONS / PALL MALL EAST / LONDON.”

Hampton & Sons were an important London cabinet-making, furnishing and decorating firm with origins in the 19th century, operating from prominent premises in Pall Mall. The survival of the firm's label provides valuable documented attribution and gives this cabinet considerably greater collector interest than an otherwise comparable unattributed example.

Combining recognised London provenance, fine satinwood, painted decoration and impressive display proportions, this is a highly decorative statement cabinet equally suited to a traditional period interior or as a focal antique within a more contemporary setting.

Condition

Presented in good antique condition, with age-related wear, marks and minor imperfections consistent with a piece dating from circa 1900.

The satinwood retains a rich, warm colour and the painted decoration remains particularly attractive. The glazed doors and side panels present well, and the cabinet is structurally sound and ready for use.

The original-style velvet lining to the interior shows visible age, fading, marking and wear, as shown in the photographs. This has been retained as part of the cabinet's character and history rather than replaced.

As with all antique furniture, minor historic repairs, variations in colour, surface marks and signs of previous use should be expected. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.
