Craftsmanship & Detail
The broad rectangular top incorporates a dark inset writing surface surrounded by a mahogany border and protected at the outer corners by brass mounts. The writing area provides a generous working surface while retaining the compact proportions associated with campaign furniture.
Beneath the top is a substantial full-width frieze drawer fitted with two recessed brass campaign handles and a centrally positioned lock. Below, each pedestal contains three graduated drawers, creating seven useful drawers in total.
The drawer fronts are fitted with characteristic recessed brass handles together with individual escutcheons, while brass straps and corner plates reinforce the campaign-inspired appearance. These fittings have developed an attractive aged patina that complements the warm colour and surface of the mahogany.
The simple architectural form allows the timber and metalwork to remain the principal decorative features. Small turned feet raise each pedestal slightly from the floor and complete the restrained utilitarian design.
Campaign furniture was traditionally created to provide durable, portable furnishings for military officers and travellers. Its combination of practicality, strong construction and distinctive brass hardware continues to make campaign and campaign-inspired furniture particularly desirable today.
At just 99 cm wide, this example offers unusually useful proportions for modern interiors. It would work particularly well as a writing desk, home-office desk, study desk or compact library desk while still retaining the visual character of a genuine antique.
Antique campaign-style furniture remains sought after by collectors and interior designers for its combination of historical character, functionality and understated design. The extensive brass fittings and well-developed mahogany surface give this desk considerable decorative appeal.
