A fine and well-proportioned antique giltwood oval overmantel mirror in the Adam manner, dating to circa 1880. The frame is constructed to the highest decorative standard, with the full vocabulary of the Neoclassical tradition applied with considerable skill and precision.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The cresting is surmounted by a fluted urn with flaming finial, flanked by husk-and-leaf swag garlands sweeping down to a pair of slender torchère columns — each carved with acanthus foliage, spiral fluting, and finial terminals. The oval plate sits within a deeply moulded beaded frame. The lower apron features scrolled acanthus leaves and a central sunburst patera. The giltwood retains its original warm patina throughout. A classic English overmantel mirror of quality and completeness among the most sought-after pieces for period interiors, country houses, and significant reception rooms.
