Overview

An elegant antique French gilt bronze six-light chandelier dating from circa 1900, designed in the refined Louis XVI Revival taste and distinguished by its unusually tall proportions, botanical ornament and frosted flower-form glass shades.

The chandelier is centred by an elongated fluted standard enriched with classical foliate decoration, acanthus detail and architectural mouldings. From the lower section sweep six graceful curved branches, each terminating in a decorative frosted glass shade modelled in the form of a flower.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The most striking feature is the chandelier's impressive vertical composition. A long fluted central column rises through a series of finely modelled collars and foliate mounts, creating an elegant architectural profile well suited to rooms with generous ceiling height.

Below, six ribbed curved arms extend outward in a balanced arrangement, each finished with a decorative gilt mount and frosted flower-form glass shade. The translucent shades soften the overall appearance and introduce a delicate botanical contrast against the richer gilt surface.

The central body is particularly decorative, incorporating scrolling foliate supports, upright laurel sprays and classical moulded ornament. The tapering lower section is enriched with sculptural classical motifs, swags and leaf decoration before terminating in a finely modelled pendant finial.

Further decorative interest is provided by the symmetrical architectural scrollwork rising through the centre, while the upper section is finished with a foliate crown, chain suspension and matching acanthus-cast ceiling canopy.

At approximately 130 cm high, this is a particularly impressive chandelier with strong vertical presence. It would work superbly within a grand entrance hall, stairwell, drawing room, dining room or bedroom where its height and delicate botanical detailing can be properly appreciated.

Quality antique French lighting of this scale remains increasingly difficult to source. The combination of six decorative glass shades, classical Louis XVI Revival ornament and substantial gilt metalwork gives this example considerable decorative appeal for collectors, period interiors and interior design projects alike.
