Description

A superb 19th century antique French Louis XV writing desk, attributed to the celebrated Parisian ébéniste Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand.

Crafted in beautifully figured kingwood veneers, the desk is richly decorated with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the shaped top and frieze. Finely cast gilt ormolu mounts adorn the corners, legs and drawer, typical of the refined craftsmanship associated with high quality Parisian cabinetmaking of the late 19th century.

The shaped top conceals a sliding tooled leather writing surface, creating a practical and elegant workspace. The desk is fitted with drawers to either side and stands on graceful Louis XV cabriole legs, terminating in ormolu sabots.

Furniture attributed to Durand is highly regarded among collectors for its luxurious interpretation of 18th century French furniture styles.

This elegant antique French bureau plat writing desk would make a striking centrepiece for a study, library or refined interior.
