Craftsmanship & Detail

The shaped top is veneered in beautifully selected kingwood and decorated with finely worked floral and foliate marquetry arranged within scrolling reserves. Contrasting veneers emphasise the serpentine outline, while the shaped gilt bronze border provides a rich and elegant finish around the perimeter.

The frieze is similarly decorated with flowing marquetry of leaves, vines and flowers, centred by a finely cast Rococo-style gilt bronze mount. Additional ormolu mounts descend from the shoulders of the desk onto the graceful cabriole legs, which terminate in decorative gilt bronze sabots.

A discreet pull at the centre releases the concealed writing arrangement. The two side compartments extend outward while the central section slides forward to reveal a leather-lined writing surface, providing a surprisingly generous and practical workspace within the desk’s compact proportions.

The quality of the veneers, refined proportions, sophisticated marquetry and extensive ormolu decoration are characteristic of high-quality French furniture produced by the leading Parisian workshops during the late nineteenth century.

Equally suited as a writing desk, occasional table, dressing table or decorative statement piece, this elegant example would work beautifully within a study, bedroom, drawing room, luxury apartment or sophisticated contemporary interior.
