A particularly elegant antique French Louis XV style kingwood marquetry two-tier étagère dating from circa 1900, finely veneered in richly figured kingwood and extensively decorated with floral marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts.

The piece is formed with two beautifully shaped serpentine tiers, each framed by a gilt-bronze edge and decorated with intricate floral and foliate marquetry. The warm colour and figuring of the kingwood contrasts beautifully with the lighter inlaid decoration, creating a highly decorative surface from every angle.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The raised upper tier is supported on gracefully curved uprights, each embellished with scrolling gilt-bronze leaf and floral mounts. The lower tier incorporates decorative side handles, allowing the piece to function equally well as an elegant serving table, drinks table or decorative display stand.

The slender cabriole-style legs are enriched with further gilt-bronze ornament and terminate in decorative sabots, giving the table the lightness and refinement associated with late nineteenth-century French revival furniture.

What particularly distinguishes this example is the abundance and quality of the decoration. Both tiers are extensively inlaid, with floral marquetry arranged within shaped reserves and framed by contrasting veneers, while the aged gilt-bronze mounts give the table additional richness without overwhelming its elegant proportions.
