Why Hawkins Antiques?

Description

Overview

A highly decorative antique French fireplace fender dating from circa 1880, constructed from cast iron and enriched with contrasting gilt-brass mounts in the elaborate Louis XV taste.

Combining impressive architectural proportions with adjustable width, this substantial hearth fender offers both practical function and exceptional decorative presence.

Key Features

  • Antique French adjustable fireplace fender
  • Dating from circa 1880
  • Louis XV style
  • Constructed principally from cast iron
  • Contrasting gilt-brass mounts
  • Highly sculptural matching end standards
  • Scrolling acanthus and rocaille ornament
  • Floral motifs and flame-form finials
  • Pierced cast-iron central gallery
  • Decorative twisted brass rail
  • Central gilt-brass escutcheon
  • Adjustable width from approximately 105cm to 126cm
  • Strong architectural and decorative presence

Craftsmanship & Detail

Each end rises into an elaborate architectural standard composed of scrolling acanthus leaves, floral ornament, pierced rocaille forms and flame-form finials. The richly modelled cast iron has developed a naturally aged dark surface, creating a striking contrast against the warmer gilt-brass decoration.

The central section is formed as a long pierced cast-iron gallery, decorated with repeating architectural openings and surmounted by a twisted brass rail. Gilt foliate brackets and a decorative central escutcheon provide additional visual emphasis and reinforce the fender's balanced symmetrical design.

The width can be adjusted from approximately 105cm to 126cm, allowing the fender to accommodate a variety of fireplace openings while retaining a proportioned and cohesive appearance.

Originally created to define the hearth and provide a protective boundary around the fire, the fender now offers both genuine practical use and strong architectural decoration.

It would make an impressive addition to a period drawing room, country house, formal sitting room, grand hallway or traditionally styled interior.

Large antique fireplace fittings of this quality are increasingly difficult to source, particularly examples retaining their coordinated gilt-brass ornament and adjustable construction. Its scale, craftsmanship and usability give it lasting appeal to collectors, interior designers and owners of period properties.

We purchased a table from Hawkins Antique and it is absolutely stunning and a mint condition! Delivery was very fast and the delivery team were fantastic and really went the extra mile to get the table into the house - it wasn't simple due to our narrow front door, but the guys managed to get it in, keeping the table safe along the way! Highly recommend - very happy! Made another purchase already!
