A fine quality 19th century French kingwood Vernis Martin display cabinet, richly decorated and mounted with elegant gilt ormolu throughout. The striking chevron marquetry kingwood veneers, superb hand-painted Vernis Martin pastoral panels, and profuse ormolu mounts combine to create a cabinet of exceptional craftsmanship and considerable decorative presence in the Louis XV style.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The cabinet is beautifully veneered in kingwood with striking chevron marquetry, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship throughout. The upper section features a glazed display area with shaped glass panels and original shelving, ideal for showcasing decorative objects or collections. The lower cupboard door is adorned with a superb hand-painted Vernis Martin panel depicting a romantic pastoral scene, framed with finely cast ormolu mounts of considerable quality — additional painted panels to the sides enhancing the decorative appeal at every angle. The graceful cabriole legs with ormolu mounts and sabots complete a piece of elegant Louis XV proportion and refined decorative programme.

Condition Report

Good condition commensurate with age. The Vernis Martin panels display well with the characteristic depth and warmth of genuine 19th century painted panels. The kingwood veneers are sound and the ormolu mounts retain good detail and original surface.

The velvet linings show age-related wear consistent with genuine use and period. The glazing is intact and the cabinet is structurally sound and stable. An honest description from a specialist dealer with over 60 years of family experience.
