A fine quality 19th century antique French kingwood and ormolu desk, dating from around 1880 and crafted in the elegant Louis XV style.

The desk is beautifully veneered in richly figured kingwood veneers, arranged in striking chevron patterns across the drawer front and frieze. The piece is enhanced with finely cast gilt ormolu mounts, including decorative mounts to the legs, corners and drawer, with an impressive Bacchus mask escutcheon to the centre.

Raised on graceful Louis XV cabriole legs terminating in ormolu sabots, the desk displays the refined proportions and craftsmanship associated with late 19th century French furniture.

The shaped top retains its inset writing surface and decorative moulded edge, while a central drawer provides practical storage.

This elegant antique French writing desk would work beautifully as a bureau plat, centre table, or decorative side table, suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition Note:  In good antique condition throughout. The kingwood veneers are sound and present well. The ormolu mounts retain excellent detail and original gilding with the warm patina of genuine age. The red upholstered writing surface shows age-related surface wear - original and honest, but replaceable in your choice of colour and tooling at cost if preferred. The structure is solid and the drawer runs well. Minor age-consistent wear throughout is entirely in keeping with a genuine piece of this period.
