Overview

A highly decorative antique French gilt Rococo Revival wall mirror with twin candle sconces, dating from circa 1900, richly modelled in the Louis XV taste with scrolling acanthus foliage, floral ornament and an elaborate ribbon-and-bow crest.

The shaped mirror plate is enclosed within an exuberant gilt-metal frame, its flowing asymmetrical curves and deeply modelled decoration creating the theatrical elegance associated with late nineteenth-century French decorative interiors. A prominent tied ribbon crowns the mirror, while baskets of flowers, scrolling foliage and rocaille-inspired ornament continue around the frame.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The lower section extends into a pair of graceful scrolling candle arms, each terminating in a foliate drip pan and decorative candle cup. These architectural additions give the mirror considerably more presence than a conventional wall mirror and would originally have allowed candlelight to reflect across the glass.

The gilt surface has developed an attractive aged tone, with subtle variation and wear that enhances rather than diminishes its antique character. The mirror plate displays the atmospheric appearance expected of an antique example; surface dust visible in the photographs was present at the time of photography.

Decorative French mirrors of this quality remain increasingly desirable because they combine sculpture, lighting history and practical interior use within a single object. Its comparatively compact proportions make this example particularly versatile while retaining the richness associated with larger salon pieces.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related wear, rubbing and variation to the gilt finish consistent with age and use. The mirror plate displays age-related surface character and spotting.
