An elegant antique Edwardian mahogany inlaid settee dating from circa 1900, beautifully decorated with fine marquetry and inlaid detailing throughout.

The shaped back is particularly striking, rising to a central decorative splat richly inlaid with classical urns, scrolling foliage and floral motifs. Further fan and floral inlay appears across the lower back and shaped front rail, creating a highly decorative composition typical of the refined cabinetmaking and ornamental taste of the Edwardian period.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The back is framed by beautifully shaped mahogany rails and upholstered in a warm golden velvet, with matching upholstery to the seat. The open arms sweep gracefully outward and incorporate delicate vertical splats, finishing in finely shaped scroll terminals.

The inlaid detail is particularly accomplished. The central splat combines classical urns, floral motifs and scrolling ornament, while the lower fan motif and decorative front rail add further visual interest and give the piece a strong late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century decorative character.

The settee stands on finely shaped legs and retains an elegant, balanced silhouette despite its generous seating width.

Its combination of decorative marquetry, refined proportions and practical seating makes it particularly suitable for a drawing room, bedroom, entrance hall, dressing room or sophisticated contemporary interior.

Condition

Presented in good antique condition, with age-related wear, marks and minor imperfections consistent with a piece dating from circa 1900.

The mahogany frame retains a rich warm colour and the inlaid decoration remains attractive and clearly defined. The structure appears well presented and the shaped arms and legs retain their elegant form.

The golden velvet upholstery shows visible age-related wear, rubbing, fading and marking, particularly to the seat and sections of the back, and should be considered part of the chair's current antique character.

As with all antique upholstered furniture, the internal upholstery and webbing have not been fully dismantled for inspection. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.
