A magnificent antique Edwardian mahogany inlaid compactum wardrobe dating from circa 1900, of impressive scale and richly decorated throughout with finely worked floral, urn and scrolling inlay.

The architectural four-door façade is particularly striking, each tall panel centred by an elaborate classical urn motif surrounded by scrolling foliate decoration. Further coordinated inlay extends across the upper frieze, lower cupboard doors and central drawer fronts, creating a highly unified and decorative appearance.

The warm mahogany provides a superb backdrop to the lighter contrasting inlay, while the stepped cornice and strong symmetrical arrangement give the wardrobe considerable presence.

Craftsmanship & Detail

Internally, the wardrobe is designed as a true compactum, combining generous hanging space with shelving and drawer storage. The outer compartments provide hanging areas, while the central section incorporates fitted shelves above a practical arrangement of drawers.

This mixture of hanging, folded storage and drawers makes the wardrobe considerably more usable than many large antique wardrobes of the period.

The repeated urn and foliate motifs across the doors and drawers are particularly effective, giving the piece a strong decorative rhythm from top to bottom. The brass ring handles provide an attractive period-style finishing detail without distracting from the inlaid surfaces.

Large Edwardian wardrobes of this scale and decorative quality are increasingly difficult to source, particularly examples retaining such an extensive coordinated scheme of inlay. Good antique condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with a wardrobe dating from circa 1900.

The mahogany retains a rich warm colour and the extensive inlaid decoration remains highly attractive. There are expected minor marks, surface wear, small losses and variations to the finish consistent with age and use.

The doors, drawers and internal storage remain functional, and the wardrobe is structurally sound for continued use.
