A striking antique Chinese black lacquer tilt top occasional table dating from circa 1900, beautifully decorated with an intricate garden scene of figures, birds, trees, bamboo and stylised clouds.

The richly detailed circular top is worked in gilt and coloured decoration against a deep black lacquer ground, creating an exceptionally decorative statement piece with strong visual impact.

Craftsmanship & Detail

The circular top is centred by an elaborate garden scene showing three figures gathered within a stylised landscape beneath pine trees and drifting clouds. Cranes and other birds appear above the scene, while bamboo, flowering plants and rocky outcrops add depth and movement.

The composition is surrounded by a broad decorative border of scrolling foliage and floral motifs, providing a strong visual frame around the central scene.

The top is supported by a turned black lacquer pedestal decorated with further gilt motifs above a shaped tripod base. The feet retain further painted and gilt detail, completing the balanced design.

The tilt-top mechanism allows the table to be displayed upright when not in use, transforming the decorated surface into an impressive vertical feature while reducing the amount of floor space required.

When lowered, the generous 85cm diameter provides a practical surface suitable for use as an occasional table, centre table or decorative lamp table.

With its dramatic black ground, intricate decoration and highly usable proportions, this table would work equally well within a traditional interior or as a contrasting statement piece in a contemporary setting.
