Why Hawkins Antiques?

Description

A charming early 20th Century British marine oil painting depicting a busy coastal waterway filled with traditional sailing craft, steam-powered vessels and distant harbour shipping, dating to circa 1910.

The composition beautifully captures the changing face of British maritime commerce during the Edwardian period, where graceful red-sailed fishing smacks continue to share the water with powerful steamships and commercial vessels. The artist has skilfully conveyed the movement of the sea through lively brushwork and subtle tonal variation, while the atmospheric sky creates depth and drama across the busy harbour scene.

The painting is executed in oil on canvas and remains on its original G. Rowney & Co. London prepared artist's canvas, stamped "Quality B" to the reverse. Founded during the eighteenth century, Rowney was one of Britain's finest suppliers of artists' materials and their canvases were widely used by professional painters throughout the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Attached to the reverse is an historic newspaper cutting commemorating the launch of HMS Thunderer at Blackwall on 2nd February 1911. Whilst this almost certainly represents a later owner's attempt to identify the subject, it provides an interesting piece of the painting's history, although the exact harbour and vessels depicted remain unidentified.

The work is presented in an attractive decorative gilt frame which complements the warm tones of the painting and makes it ready for immediate display.

A wonderfully atmospheric British marine painting that would make an excellent addition to any collection of maritime art, Edwardian paintings or traditional coastal interiors.

We purchased a table from Hawkins Antique and it is absolutely stunning and a mint condition! Delivery was very fast and the delivery team were fantastic and really went the extra mile to get the table into the house - it wasn't simple due to our narrow front door, but the guys managed to get it in, keeping the table safe along the way! Highly recommend - very happy! Made another purchase already!
