Overview

A highly decorative antique Arts & Crafts oak sideboard dating from circa 1900, combining beautifully figured timber, architectural proportions and distinctive Art Nouveau-influenced detailing.

Constructed in richly figured oak, the sideboard has a broad, gently bowed profile surmounted by an elaborate raised back centred by a striking shaped mirror. Craftsmanship & Detail

The quality of the timber is one of the most striking features of this sideboard. The drawer fronts display particularly attractive figuring, while the broad oak surfaces throughout have developed a warm, mature colour that gives the piece considerable depth and character.

The raised back is especially accomplished. Its central shaped mirror is framed by sweeping architectural lines, with panelled sections to either side decorated with stylised organic motifs. Turned columns and groups of slender spindles at each end lighten the composition and give the upper section an unusually elegant appearance for a sideboard of this scale.

Below, two substantial drawers retain decorative brass ring handles and provide useful storage above a spacious four-door cupboard. The outer cupboard doors are enriched with deeply carved, flowing foliate ornament, providing another strong reference to the naturalistic vocabulary associated with late Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau design.

The combination of figured oak, organic decoration, architectural construction and practical proportions makes this an especially appealing example of turn-of-the-century British furniture. It would make an impressive statement piece in a dining room, living room or large entrance hall while retaining considerable everyday functionality.

Large and individual examples of Arts & Crafts furniture are increasingly appreciated for their craftsmanship, natural materials and ability to sit successfully within both period and contemporary interiors. With its distinctive design, substantial proportions and excellent decorative presence, this is a particularly characterful example.
