An elegant antique Regency mahogany sofa table, circa 1830, featuring a richly figured top, two drop leaves and two drawers, raised on an elaborate carved column and platform base.

The mahogany displays striking flame figuring and warm brown tones, complemented by decorative moulded borders, spiral-carved supports and sweeping sabre legs. With the leaves raised, the table extends from 94 cm to 148 cm wide, offering a versatile surface for display or occasional writing.

Craftsmanship & Design

The rectangular central top is flanked by two hinged leaves with rounded outer corners. Rich flame figuring brings movement to the mahogany surface, while a repeating carved border follows the exposed edges of the top and leaves.

Two drawers are arranged side by side beneath the top, each fitted with a pair of decorative circular metal handles. A bold rounded moulding runs beneath the drawer fronts, giving the frieze a distinctive textured outline.

The upper section is carried on four turned columns, each combining ring turnings with a spiral-carved lower section. These rise from a shaped platform with concave sides and a corresponding decorative border.

Four sweeping sabre legs extend from the platform, detailed with carved foliage and reeded channels. Metal paw caps and castors complete the base, balancing the broad tabletop with an elegant, open silhouette.

Mahogany & Decorative Detail

The top displays particularly attractive figuring, with sweeping patterns across the central surface and contrasting grain on the drop leaves. The warm colour is complemented by deeper tones within the carved supports and moulded edges.

The combination of figured timber, spiral carving and curved supports gives the table decorative interest from several angles, making the base as much a feature as the top.

Versatility & Placement

With the leaves lowered, the table measures 94 cm wide, allowing it to sit beside a sofa or serve as a display table in a sitting room, study or entrance hall. Raising both leaves increases the overall width to 148 cm.

The drawers provide useful storage for stationery and small household items. The top can also serve for occasional writing, with chair height and clearance beneath the frieze considered when choosing seating.
