Georgian Mahogany Furniture
Georgian mahogany furniture represents the pinnacle of British cabinet making. From the 1750s through to the 1830s, Cuban and Honduras mahogany was the prestige timber of the age — worked by the greatest makers of the period into sideboards, dining tables, bureau bookcases, and card tables of extraordinary quality and enduring elegance.
At Hawkins Antiques we specialise in Georgian mahogany furniture and regularly stock an exceptional selection — bow-front sideboards, extending dining tables, bureau bookcases, pembroke tables, and card tables attributed to or in the manner of the great Georgian makers: Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and Gillows.
Based in Barry, South Wales, we deliver throughout the UK using our trusted two-man white-glove delivery service.

Expert Advice
Buying Guide: Georgian Mahogany Furniture
Cuban vs Honduras Mahogany
The finest Georgian furniture uses Cuban mahogany — a dense, richly figured timber with a deep reddish-brown colour that deepens further with age. Honduras mahogany, used from the mid-18th century as Cuban supplies diminished, is slightly lighter in colour and less densely figured but still produces furniture of exceptional quality. Both are far superior to the African mahogany used in later reproduction pieces.
Patina — The Most Important Factor
The patina of genuine old mahogany — built up over 200+ years of waxing, use, and exposure to light — is the single most important quality indicator. It cannot be replicated. Genuine Georgian mahogany has a depth of colour, warmth, and lustre that immediately distinguishes it from later pieces. A heavily repolished piece loses this patina and with it much of its value and character.
Construction Details
Check drawer construction carefully — hand-cut dovetails with slight irregularities, solid wood drawer bottoms running front to back, and secondary timbers of pine or oak with consistent age patina. On case pieces, examine the backboards — these should be solid wood, hand-planed, and showing shrinkage gaps between planks. Machine-cut joints or plywood indicate a later piece.
Inlay & Stringing
Georgian mahogany furniture is often decorated with stringing — thin lines of contrasting timber or brass inlaid into the surface — and crossbanding in satinwood, tulipwood, or boxwood. Check that inlay is original and intact. Missing or replaced stringing is a sign of wear but is acceptable on a piece of genuine age. Replaced inlay that does not match the original timber is more problematic.
