Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Georgian Mahogany Furniture

Cuban vs Honduras Mahogany

The finest Georgian furniture uses Cuban mahogany — a dense, richly figured timber with a deep reddish-brown colour that deepens further with age. Honduras mahogany, used from the mid-18th century as Cuban supplies diminished, is slightly lighter in colour and less densely figured but still produces furniture of exceptional quality. Both are far superior to the African mahogany used in later reproduction pieces.

Patina — The Most Important Factor

The patina of genuine old mahogany — built up over 200+ years of waxing, use, and exposure to light — is the single most important quality indicator. It cannot be replicated. Genuine Georgian mahogany has a depth of colour, warmth, and lustre that immediately distinguishes it from later pieces. A heavily repolished piece loses this patina and with it much of its value and character.

Construction Details

Check drawer construction carefully — hand-cut dovetails with slight irregularities, solid wood drawer bottoms running front to back, and secondary timbers of pine or oak with consistent age patina. On case pieces, examine the backboards — these should be solid wood, hand-planed, and showing shrinkage gaps between planks. Machine-cut joints or plywood indicate a later piece.

Inlay & Stringing

Georgian mahogany furniture is often decorated with stringing — thin lines of contrasting timber or brass inlaid into the surface — and crossbanding in satinwood, tulipwood, or boxwood. Check that inlay is original and intact. Missing or replaced stringing is a sign of wear but is acceptable on a piece of genuine age. Replaced inlay that does not match the original timber is more problematic.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Georgian mahogany furniture special?
Georgian mahogany furniture was made during the golden age of British cabinet making — a period when the finest craftsmen in the world were working in London and the great provincial centres, using the best available timbers, and producing furniture of extraordinary quality and elegance. The combination of superb Cuban or Honduras mahogany, exceptional hand craftsmanship, and the patina of 200+ years of age creates pieces that simply cannot be replicated today.
How do I identify genuine Georgian mahogany furniture?
Look for hand-cut dovetails in drawers with slight irregularities, solid wood drawer bottoms, and secondary timbers of pine or oak with consistent age patina. The mahogany itself should have a deep, warm reddish-brown colour with the lustre of genuine old wood. Examine the back — old backboards are solid wood, hand-planed, and show shrinkage gaps. Check for hand-made screws with off-centre slots on fittings.
What is the most popular Georgian mahogany piece?
The Georgian mahogany bow-front sideboard is perhaps the most enduringly popular piece — elegant, practical, and perfectly proportioned for a dining room. Georgian extending dining tables with matching chairs are also highly sought after. Bureau bookcases and pembroke tables are popular for smaller spaces and home offices.
Can I view Georgian mahogany furniture in person?
Yes — our showroom and warehouse is at Unit 15, Palmers Vale Business Centre, Barry, CF63 2XA. Please call ahead on 01446 744271 to arrange a convenient time. Georgian mahogany really needs to be seen in person — photographs cannot capture the depth of colour and patina of genuine old mahogany.
