Antique Wardrobes for Sale UK

Antique Wardrobes

An antique wardrobe is one of the most practical and beautiful pieces of bedroom furniture you can own. Built to last centuries, with hanging space, drawers, and mirrored doors, the finest Victorian and Edwardian wardrobes offer storage and craftsmanship that modern fitted furniture simply cannot match.

We stock an excellent and constantly changing selection of antique wardrobes — from Victorian mahogany triple wardrobes and satinwood inlaid compactums to French oak armoires and Edwardian painted bedroom pieces. Every piece is checked for structural soundness and honest condition.

Based in Barry, South Wales, we deliver throughout the UK using our trusted two-man white-glove delivery service.

Our Stock

Types of Antique Wardrobe We Stock

Our wardrobe collection covers the full range of Victorian, Edwardian, and Continental bedroom furniture.

Victorian Mahogany Wardrobes

Large, substantial wardrobes in rich mahogany — typically with a central mirrored door flanked by panelled wings, deep drawers below, and hanging space above. Built to last, and still the most practical bedroom storage available.

Satinwood Inlaid Compactums

The Edwardian compactum — a combined wardrobe with central hanging space, flanking mirrored doors, and banks of drawers — represents the pinnacle of bedroom furniture design. Satinwood inlay and hand-painted decoration make the finest examples truly exceptional pieces.

Edwardian Painted Wardrobes

Lighter and more elegant than Victorian pieces — satinwood or mahogany wardrobes with hand-painted floral panels, inlaid stringing, and bevelled mirrors. Beautiful, practical, and perfectly proportioned for modern bedrooms.

French Oak Armoires

Solid oak armoires from 19th-century France — with carved decoration, panelled doors, and substantial hanging space. A rustic alternative to the English wardrobe, with exceptional character and presence.

Matching Bedroom Sets

We often have matching bedroom sets available — wardrobe, dressing table, and chest of drawers from the same maker and period. A matched set creates a cohesive, beautiful bedroom that is impossible to achieve with modern furniture.

Breakfront & Triple Wardrobes

Large breakfront wardrobes with a projecting central section — typically the grandest bedroom pieces of the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Statement pieces for larger bedrooms with high ceilings.

Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Antique Wardrobes

Size & Access

Antique wardrobes are large pieces — always measure your room, doorways, and staircase before purchasing. Most Victorian and Edwardian wardrobes can be partially disassembled for delivery — the cornice, doors, and sometimes the base separate — but check with us before buying if access is tight. We assess every delivery route in advance.

Internal Condition

Check the interior carefully — hanging rails, drawer runners, and internal fittings should all be present and functional. Some original interior fittings are missing on older pieces, but these can usually be replaced sympathetically. The internal cedar lining found in the finest Edwardian wardrobes is a sign of quality and helps protect clothing.

Mirrors

Original bevelled mirrors add significantly to the value and beauty of a wardrobe. Check for silvering loss — some foxing and spotting is normal and acceptable on antique mirrors; heavy silvering loss affecting large areas is more problematic. We always note mirror condition in our listings.

Veneer & Exterior Condition

Check the veneer carefully for lifting, cracking, or replaced sections — particularly on the doors and drawer fronts which receive the most handling. Some wear is expected and desirable. Major veneer loss affects both appearance and value. We always disclose veneer condition fully in our listings.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an antique wardrobe fit through my doors?
Most Victorian and Edwardian wardrobes can be partially disassembled for delivery — the cornice, doors, and sometimes the base section all separate. This allows access through standard doorways and up most staircases. Please call us on 01446 744271 before purchasing if you have any concerns about access — we are happy to advise.
How much hanging space do antique wardrobes have?
This varies considerably by piece. We always include internal dimensions and a description of the internal fittings in our listings — hanging space, number of drawers, shelf space, and any special features such as trouser rails or shoe racks. If you need specific dimensions, please contact us before purchasing.
Are antique wardrobes practical for everyday use?
Absolutely — antique wardrobes were built for daily use and are generally far more robust than modern flatpack alternatives. With basic care they will last another century. The internal fittings can be adapted for modern clothing storage if required.
Can I view antique wardrobes in person?
Yes — our showroom and warehouse is at Unit 15, Palmers Vale Business Centre, Barry, CF63 2XA. Please call ahead on 01446 744271 to arrange a convenient time to visit.
Do you buy antique wardrobes?
Yes — we are always looking to buy quality antique wardrobes, particularly satinwood compactums, Victorian mahogany triple wardrobes, and matching bedroom sets. Contact us at lee@hawkinsantiques.com with photographs and dimensions.
