Expert Advice

Buying Guide: Antique Satinwood Furniture

Identifying Quality Satinwood

The finest satinwood has a rich, warm golden colour with a pronounced lustre — almost a sheen — that comes from the interlocked grain of the timber. Lower quality satinwood is paler and flatter in appearance. On the best pieces, the veneer is carefully matched so the grain flows consistently across drawer fronts and door panels. The painted decoration on quality pieces shows real artistic skill with naturalistic shading and depth.

Painted Decoration

Hand-painted decoration is the defining feature of the finest satinwood pieces. Original paintwork shows depth, movement, and subtle shading — look for naturalistic flowers with convincing shadows, figures with real modelling, and classical motifs with crisp detail. Modern retouching looks flat and uniform by comparison. Check all painted panels carefully for signs of overpainting or restoration.

Veneer Condition

Satinwood veneer is relatively thin and susceptible to moisture damage — check carefully for lifting edges, bubbling, or replaced sections. The edges and corners of doors and drawer fronts are the most vulnerable areas. Minor veneer repairs are acceptable on pieces of this age; significant loss affects both appearance and value. We always disclose veneer condition fully in our listings.

Distinguishing Georgian from Edwardian

Georgian satinwood furniture (c.1780–1810) tends to be more restrained in decoration — relying on the beauty of the timber, stringing, and crossbanding rather than painted panels. Edwardian satinwood pieces are more lavishly decorated with painted panels. Georgian pieces are generally heavier in construction; Edwardian pieces lighter and more refined. Both periods produce exceptional furniture.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is satinwood?
Satinwood is a pale golden-yellow timber with a lustrous, silky grain — the name comes from its resemblance to satin fabric. Two main varieties were used in antique furniture: West Indian satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia), which has a richer golden colour and more pronounced figure, and East Indian satinwood (Fagara flava), which is paler and more even in tone. West Indian satinwood is generally considered the finer of the two and is found on the best Georgian pieces.
When was satinwood furniture most popular?
Satinwood had two great periods of popularity. The first was the late Georgian period, roughly 1780–1810, when designers such as Hepplewhite and Sheraton favoured it for its elegant, light appearance as a reaction against the heavier mahogany furniture of the earlier Georgian period. The second was the Edwardian period, roughly 1900–1915, when satinwood was combined with hand-painted decoration to create the most lavishly decorative English furniture of any period.
Is painted satinwood furniture valuable?
Yes — high-quality painted satinwood furniture, particularly pieces by known makers such as Maple & Co or Hampton & Sons, commands significant premiums. The quality of the painted decoration is the key factor — pieces with exceptional original paintwork are genuinely rare and highly collectible. Condition of both the veneer and the paintwork are critical to value.
Can I view satinwood furniture in person?
Yes — our showroom and warehouse is at Unit 15, Palmers Vale Business Centre, Barry, CF63 2XA. Please call ahead on 01446 744271 to arrange a convenient time. Satinwood really needs to be seen in person — the lustre and painted decoration are very difficult to appreciate fully in photographs.
Do you buy antique satinwood furniture?
Yes — satinwood is one of our specialist areas and we are always looking to buy quality pieces, particularly painted display cabinets, demi-lune commodes, and Edwardian bedroom furniture. Contact us at lee@hawkinsantiques.com with photographs and dimensions.
